Job Description
Tenstorrent is leading the industry on cutting-edge AI technology, revolutionizing performance expectations, ease of use, and cost efficiency. With AI redefining the computing paradigm, solutions must evolve to unify innovations in software models, compilers, platforms, networking, and semiconductors. Our diverse team of technologists have developed a high performance RISC-V CPU from scratch, and share a passion for AI and a deep desire to build the best AI platform possible. We value collaboration, curiosity, and a commitment to solving hard problems. We are growing our team and looking for contributors of all seniorities.
Tenstorrent is looking for a Workload Performance Analysis Engineer to help build the performance optimization foundation for our next-generation RISC-V CPUs. Today, there is significant opportunity to improve how modern software workloads perform on RISC-V, and this role will help close that gap by understanding how real-world applications behave on the CPU and developing the analysis, optimization, and workload methodologies needed to improve performance. You’ll work with production software and workloads built with PHP, Python, Java, and Node.js, along with the underlying runtimes, libraries, operating systems, and CPU architecture. You’ll profile and characterize workloads, identify where performance is being lost, reduce complex applications into representative workloads, and work with CPU architects and software engineers to determine what changes—from software optimization to microarchitecture—can deliver the biggest gains. This is an excellent opportunity for a new PhD graduate who wants to work at the intersection of software, computer architecture, and high-performance CPU design.
This role is remote, based out of North America.
We welcome candidates at various experience levels for this role. During the interview process, candidates will be assessed for the appropriate level, and offers will align with that level, which may differ from the one in this posting.
Who You Are
- You’re a new PhD graduate in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field with a strong background in computer architecture, systems, workload analysis, or performance optimization.
- You’re curious about why real-world software performs the way it does and enjoy digging from the application level down through runtimes, operating systems, and CPU microarchitecture.
- You have experience working with PHP, Python, Java, Node.js, or similar production software stacks and want to understand how these workloads map onto CPU hardware.
- You’re comfortable using profiling, simulation, and data analysis to identify performance bottlenecks and develop hypotheses for optimization.
- You’re excited by the opportunity to help build something that is still relatively new for RISC-V: a systematic approach to optimizing modern datacenter and AI workloads for high-performance CPUs.
What We Need
- PhD in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field, with research or project experience in computer architecture, workload characterization, performance analysis, systems, or optimization.
- Strong understanding of modern CPU architecture, including pipelines, speculative execution, caches, memory hierarchies, branch prediction, and vector/SIMD processing.
- Experience analyzing software workloads using tools such as Linux perf, profiling/tracing tools, QEMU, simulators, or equivalent performance-analysis environments.
- Strong programming skills in C/C++, Python, and scripting, plus experience with one or more high-level application environments such as PHP, Java, or Node.js.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work across the hardware/software boundary and communicate findings clearly to CPU architects and software engineers.
What You Will Learn
- How modern PHP, Python, Java, and Node.js applications execute on high-performance CPUs and where their performance bottlenecks originate.
- How to build a performance optimization strategy for RISC-V CPUs, where many established software and workload optimizations are still in their early stages.
- How workload behavior translates into CPU microarchitectural decisions involving execution, caching, memory, branch prediction, and overall system performance.
- How to move from application profiling and workload analysis to performance modeling, hardware experimentation, and architectural recommendations.
- How CPU architects, compiler engineers, runtime developers, and software teams collaborate to build a high-performance software ecosystem around a new CPU architecture.

Tenstorrent offers a highly competitive compensation package and benefits, and we are an equal opportunity employer.
This offer of employment is contingent upon the applicant being eligible to access U.S. export-controlled technology. Due to U.S. export laws, including those codified in the U.S. Export Administration Regulations (EAR), the Company is required to ensure compliance with these laws when transferring technology to nationals of certain countries (such as EAR Country Groups D:1, E1, and E2). These requirements apply to persons located in the U.S. and all countries outside the U.S. As the position offered will have direct and/or indirect access to information, systems, or technologies subject to these laws, the offer may be contingent upon your citizenship/permanent residency status or ability to obtain prior license approval from the U.S. Commerce Department or applicable federal agency. If employment is not possible due to U.S. export laws, any offer of employment will be rescinded.
